ECHO still needs hundreds more volunteers day before 2025 Austin homelessness count

Austin (KXAN) — The Ending Community Homelessness Coalition, or ECHO, said it hopes to see hundreds more volunteers sign up to help conduct its biannual Point in Time Homelessness Count this Saturday.
Angela de Leon, director of operations for ECHO, said going into the final 24 hours of the PIT count, the agency was short 300-400 volunteers.
On average, de Leon said the count gets around 800 volunteers, and in an ideal situation she'd like to have as many as 1,200.
The agency has made progress in recruiting people for its counting efforts. One month ago, ECHO said it needed 750 more volunteers.

de Leon said she hopes to see more volunteers sign on in the next 24 hours, and encourages people to show up even if it's at the last minute.
"Quite frankly, someone could show up at 3 a.m. at the Trinity Center downtown, and we will absolutely get them onboarded and sent somewhere where we could use their help," de Leon said.
Volunteers can sign up on ECHO's website.
