INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This might come as a surprise to many, but Indiana has been ranked as the third best state to drive in by WalletHub. The ranking is a part of WalletHub’s “Best & Worst States to Drive In (2025)” list, where they looked at things like cost of ownership, maintenance, traffic, Infrastructure, safety and access to vehicles. According to WalletHub, “Indiana is the third-best state to drive in, boasting the second-best road quality and the ninth-lowest traffic congestion in the country. It also takes road safety very seriously, with the fourth-strictest driving laws. These factors have helped improve driving conditions in the state, with traffic fatalities declining by nearly 17% between 2021 and 2022, the third-highest percentage.” WalletHub says Indiana also makes it convenient to be a car owner, with the 10th-most gas stations per capita. The Hoosier state is also loaded with auto dealerships (13th-most), auto repair shops (14th), and car washes (15th). Hoosier drivers also benefit from lower car insurance rates, auto maintenance costs, and vehicle operating costs. Only Kansas and Idaho were ranked higher on WalletHub’s survey. “Owning a car can really squeeze your wallet if you’re not in the right location,” WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said. “On top of having pricey gas, maintenance and insurance expenses, some states can hurt you even more financially with excessive traffic congestion, which wastes both your fuel and your productivity. The best states to drive in are ones that are relatively rural, with smaller populations, a low cost of living, well-maintained roads and safe motorists.” The three states that are the worst to drive in were Hawaii, Washington and Montana.
