WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A focus on sustainability in agriculture was the purpose of a gathering in Wichita this week. No-till on the Plains held its 29th Annual Winter Conference.
More than 300 farmers from all across the region gathered for three days to learn and improve their farming techniques through a no-till method. The conference also highlighted ways to reduce soil erosion and water retention.
The executive director said that no-till farming has become key in building healthier soil systems and dealing with ongoing drought conditions.
"We're trying to really empower farmers with this conference to go home and do better with their soil, kind of get guys excited again and build that community aspect that we've lost over. You know, farming has turned into an isolated event. The farm suicide crisis in America is horrible. This is a way we continue to foster relationships," said Aaron Sawyers, the Executive Director of No-till on the Plains.

The conference also showcased the latest AG technology to help create more sustainable farming.
"So the number one thing to be sustainable, in our mind, is to quit tilling the soil. We got to stop disturbing that and keep our soil intact. But then we use, like, behind me, the picture of the cover crops. We use cover crops to keep soil covered and actively growing something during those periods in between crops," Sawyers added.
He also said that he hopes farmers are able to balance being productive and sustainable so that future generations can have land they can farm on.
Sawyers said that this conference is more than just a conference, saying it allows farmers to build their own legacy.
