Eagles’ Goedert, Jurgens facing fitness battles for NFC title game
Jan 23, 2025
PHILADELPHIA — Coach Nick Sirianni said Thursday that center Cam Jurgens (back) and tight end Dallas Goedert (ankle) would practice, but when practice rolled around at the Linc, both players sat out.
Perhaps their absences were a surprise to the coach himself, and they would be key losses if not on the field they’re not on the field in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against Washington. Jurgens has dealt with back ailments for part of the year but has started 16 games. The oft-injured Goedert has started just 10 games, missing time with knee and hamstring injuries.
Grant Calcaterra would again start if Goedert is out. If Jurgens misses out, Landon Dickerson would slide from guard to center, where he has plenty of experience.
“We’re very confident,” left tackle Jordan Mailata said about Dickerson after practice. “Landon was a center for part of his life, and pretty confident in him if his number is to be called. But we’ve got faith in Cam coming back. Stout (offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland) does a great job of preparing us every week and preparing different players at different positions for these types of things.”
Quarterback Jalen Hurts, meanwhile, was a full participant and appeared to have no significant limitations in his movement after being hampered by a knee issue in last week’s win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Witt Jr. said Thursday morning that when Hurts carries the ball Sunday, Washington will hit him like a running back, and it will be up to the Birds to protect him.
“Every team is going to try to tackle Jalen like a running back,” Sirianni said. “He’s running with the football. They’ll try to tackle him. We already are ultimately cautious with how we use him and how we think about each play because we know how important it is to have him out there. But I wouldn’t expect anything else. Jalen knows how to take care of himself, and we know how to help him do that as well as far as the way the scheme goes.”
The Eagles’ defense will have its hands full trying to stop dual-threat quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is trying to become the first rookie QB to reach a Super Bowl.
“They’re a tough, gritty team, and that’s how we want to play, too,” linebacker Zach Baun said. “So, you can’t take them lightly. And they have a lot of weapons and a lot of angles they can attack you from, from the quarterback to the running backs to a good offensive line to a great scheme.
“It takes the whole defense,” he added about accounting for Daniels. “From the back end and what we do in coverage, to the guys up front and kind of crush-rushing him and containing him that way, not giving him escape lanes to get out of the pocket or escape through a B gap, because that’s where he’s most dangerous.”
Daniels is the sixth rookie quarterback to reach a conference championship game. The 49ers’ Brock Purdy (2022-23), Jets’ Mark Sanchez (2009-10), Ravens’ Joe Flacco (2008-09), Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger (2004-05) and Tampa Bay’s Shaun King (1999-2000) were the others.
Baun, who had mostly been a special teams player, signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in the offseason and has gone on to become a Pro Bowler. Earlier this week, he was named a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year.
“That’s really cool, really special,” Baun said. “Honestly not even the spectrum as a goal of mine. I really just try to be the best player I can be and try to maximize my potential and my ability. So, for that to (be) an outcome of the work I’ve put in, I’m really proud of myself. And then it’s a lot of credit to the guys up front and the guys on this team in aiding in my success. I really appreciate their efforts.”
Sirianni was snubbed for Coach of the Year, not named as one of the five finalists, despite overcoming adversity early in the season and guiding the Eagles to 14 wins. Washington’s Dan Quinn, Detroit’s Dan Campbell, Minnesota’s Kevin O’Connell, Denver’s Sean Payton and Kansas City’s Andy Reid were voted ahead of him.
“I don’t care about that stuff, I just want to win,” Sirianni said. “And we’re in a position to be able to, if we win, go to the Super Bowl. That’s pretty dope. That’s all my focus is on.”
