TOPEKA (KSNT) - Some Shawnee County homeowners are dealing with possible identity theft after someone burglarized the drop box at the courthouse. Shawnee County Treasurer Larry Mah told the county commissioners he discovered the theft. Sheriff's deputies were able to recover seven stolen property tax checks. The treasurer's office notified some of the victims. However, those victims now need to take extra precautions, like opening new bank accounts, to secure their personal information. Topeka groups conduct Point in Time homeless count, TRM expects uptick "If you think you were involved in that, you need to contact us," Mah said. "But we will ask for proof that one that you have stopped payment on your check for you will incur that cost on your own, but also some proof that you did write the check in that time period." Mah said the theft happened on or around Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024. If that’s when you dropped off a payment, you may also be a victim. For more local news, click here.
