PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence City Councilor Miguel Sanchez doubled down on a social media post he made criticizing U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), as agents across the country begin enforcing President Donald Trump's immigration policies. "[Expletive] ICE," Sanchez wrote on X in response to another post regarding Trump's reversal of a policy that prevented ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from arresting undocumented migrants at sensitive locations. Sanchez told 12 News he was boldly expressing his opinion regarding Trump's crackdown on immigration. "I think it's important to use our voices and platforms to strongly oppose those unjust, unfair and very targeted actions," Sanchez told 12 News Thursday night. "Folks know exactly what's going on, and I want to call it out as much as possible." Smiley: Providence will take Trump’s immigration policy ‘one step at a time’ ICE agents have already arrested hundreds of migrants wanted for outstanding crimes nationwide, including in Boston. Sanchez said he's worried ICE will go beyond the scope of arresting violent criminals. "They're going to come for innocent working families, people that have been here for many decades," he said. "I'm not going to be naive to the situation." Gov. Dan McKee told reporters Thursday afternoon there's no indication that ICE agents have been conducting raids in the Ocean State. He also said the state has been alerting ICE and CBP about undocumented migrants accused of violent crimes in Rhode Island. "What we’re concerned about, obviously, is we want to make sure it doesn’t go beyond that," McKee explained. "We have [migrants] in the state who pay taxes — they’re definitely baked into our communities." McKee reiterated that he wants there to be a clear path for undocumented Rhode Islanders seeking legal status. McKee: No evidence of ICE raids happening in Rhode Island Sanchez echoed that sentiment. "Folks who try to go through the right way ... still don't have that — in my opinion — fair opportunity to become a legal resident, a green card holder or a permanent resident," he said. But not everyone agrees. R.I. Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz, R-North Smithfield, said that, while she believes all immigrants should arrive legally, Trump's policy specifically targets dangerous criminals. "They shouldn't be here, they should be sent back to their homes," de la Cruz said, referring to undocumented migrants with violent criminal histories. "I just don't see why anybody would be against that." de la Cruz, who's parents are immigrants, also made mention of the ICE raids happening in Boston. "We're not too far from Boston," de la Cruz said. "I'd say, Mr. Trump, stop in Providence too while you're at it." "There's no reason to keep violent criminals here in our country," she added. "Send them back to their country of origin and then we can figure out how to put [migrants] on a path to citizenship." Rep. Jon Brien, I-Woonsocket, believes everyone should "get out of the way" and let ICE do their job, especially when it comes to arresting undocumented migrants with violent criminal backgrounds. "We should be cooperating with them to make our communities safer," Brien said. Brien also described supporting undocumented migrants as "an affront to those who have done everything they can to go by the book and do things the right way." "When it comes down to it, being illegal is illegal, and I think that everybody should be following the process and doing everything they can to become an American citizen," Brien explained. Sanchez told 12 News he does not regret his post and will continue to fight for "everyone who calls Providence home." Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
