SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- They are our nation's heroes; we're talking about firefighters, police officers, first responders and veterans. What they do for our country, for instance, what we've seen recently in California with the wildfires, is incredible; risking their own lives to save others. That's why a local non-profit has been giving them a break from those stresses and treating them to a little bit of fun with outdoor adventures. Whether it's fly fishing or pheasant hunting, Hero Haven out of Brandon, South Dakota has been providing our nation's heroes with lifetime experiences. "Hero Haven; all we do is take cops, veterans, firefighters, and first responders on an outdoor adventure to basically say thank you for your service," Blomgren said. Wade Blomgren is the co-founder of the non-profit. "If it's outdoors we pretty much have our hands on it in some way, shape, or form," Blomgren said. New lawmakers have questions about men’s prison They take those heroes on outdoor adventures all across the country. "We go from Florida, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, both Dakotas and Nebraska," Blomgren said. A total of 14 different states, so far. Blomgren, who served in Iraq himself, says he organizes these outdoor adventures free of charge for one reason. "I don't think there's anything that feels better than seeing somebody who's willing to run towards danger when everybody else says 'hey I'm just going to back up' and we say let's take you on a bucket list trip and when they go pay the bill, we say you've already paid enough, thank you for your service," Blomgren said. But to pull them off, they need sponsors to help pay for these trips. "We have seven inherent values that are at the core of our store, and one of them is being a good community citizen," Mike Chaplin said. Mike Chaplin is with Luxury Automotive. His car dealership is one of the sponsors that paid for 45 heroes to go on this hunting trip near Gregory, some of them were from the Denver Police Department and gang unit. "We really didn't know what to expect, we drove out to Gregory and after getting our stuff unpacked and going in we got an opportunity to meet the guys from Denver in the gang unit and the police department and the veterans who came with Wade and worked with him, your heart just swells, it was an opportunity to thanks these guys for everything they've done, uh, we don't know what they've all gone through, but it's an easy opportunity to say thank you to them," Chaplin said. And sometimes that's all it takes, knowing somebody cares about them. "One guy said to me while looking into the whites of my eyes, Hero Haven saved my life and another two, three, or four guys have said this has changed my life, this has given me a purpose, Blomgren said. Last year they did a total of 14 adventures in 12 different states with over 100 heroes. "What we've always believed is if we find heroes who want to go, we can always find sponsors who want to support and outfitters to make it happen," Blomgren said. Don: the first year how many did you have? Wade: The first event we did, we brought 45 guys for one pheasant hunt. And by the sounds of it, there's going to be plenty more in the future to support our nation's heroes. "We'd love to go on more, in fact, I haven't announced this at our store, but we'd like to do it again in 2025," Chaplin said.
