SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) -- A pioneer in print media and longtime Sioux Falls community leader has died. Larry Fuller, a former publisher of the Argus Leader newspaper, died Thursday at the age of 83.
Larry Fuller came to Sioux Falls in 1977 to be the executive editor of the Argus Leader before moving up and taking on the role of the paper's publisher.
"It's been really rewarding over the years to see the paper grow professionally and I think in terms of community acceptance too, and today, I think the Argus is regarded as one of the best newspapers its size in the country," Fuller said in 1984.
Fuller was a journalistic visionary who, back in the early 1980's, saw the potential of technology in providing new platforms for people to get their news.

"For example, if you are a banker and you got up in the morning, you could look at your personal computer and find out what the news headlines of the last 24-hours are," Fuller said in 1984.
Fuller was active in the community, including being a strong supporter of the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum. Mike Cooper, the arboretum's executive director, remembers Fuller for his lifelong interest in seeing the city thrive.
"I remember a few summers, he would actually host driveway parties at his house that a small group of us would come over with lawn chairs and sit around and just talk about what was going on in the city," Cooper said.
Fuller was true to his Irish heritage by being involved with the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade from the very beginning.
"It was a tough economic time. We had, '79 was not a good year. It led to a recession in the early '80s. And spirits of people weren't that high," Fuller said in 2017.
Fuller served as the parade's grand marshal in 2017.
"I didn't even know I was being nominated, so it was a great honor. I've had a lot of fun doing it," Fuller said in 2017.
Fuller's family tells us the former parade marshal started his final day planning to write a news release for this year's parade. Such was his dedication to journalism, the city and its people.
"And I hope I'm remembered as appreciating the town as much as I have," Fuller said in 1984.
Fuller was the father of KELOLAND News Director Beth Jensen. Funeral arrangements are pending.
