Braun’s Indiana budget proposal ends funding for Martin University
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — There is no money in Gov. Mike Braun’s state budget proposal for Martin University, a private university in Indianapolis and Indiana’s only predominantly Black institution.
State Rep. Gregory W. Porter, a Democrat from Indianapolis, said, “These are just racist moves by this administration, so it’s not fair. We are part of this society and we should not continue to have the rug pulled from under us.”
Porter says the new Republican governor’s budget is a complete cut from the 2023-2024 budget, and there’s also no money for the College Success Program, which encourages minority and first-generation, low-income students to attend college.
Porter says that means a total of $10 million in support for minority students has been eliminated. “Not to fund it at this level would be disastrous, I believe from my perspective for the university and for the students.”
The state has a two-year budget cycle. Martin University received a $2.5 million grant from the legislature in the last budget.
Porter says the community needs to speak up. “You need to come down to the Statehouse, let it be known, have some meetings with the governor’s people, be in committees when these bills are heard and express yourself.”
Braun’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
Martin University issued a statement.
“Martin University has monitored and is aware of developments related to the state budget. In the meantime, Martin University remains focused on its mission to serve our students and community.”
