It's a test of physical and mental endurance for Ocean Safety lifeguards daily.
"I'm always training on my breaks and just trying to learn from my senior guards and definitely staying in shape because you got to be ready for anything," stated Kelsie Grant, Ocean Safety Lifeguard.
The department is looking to recruit more lifeguards who will be dedicated to protecting our waters and educating the public.

"We're also looking for people who are not afraid to do basic first aid to CPR cases and willing to put their lives on the line," said Lt. Zachary Hambaro. "Sometimes, we do the rescues in high surf and in areas that [are] far away from people."
The first tryouts of the year will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1, at Ala Moana Beach Park starting at 8 a.m. Applicants are not required to attend both days. The physical performance examination will consist of the following events in order and must be completed in the allotted time given:
1,000 Yard Run and 1,000 Yard Swim Time — under 25:00 Minutes
Run-Swim-Run 100 Yards each length Time — under 3:00 Minutes
400-Yard Rescue Board Paddle Time — under 4:00 Minutes
All required documents must be provided on the day of examinations:
A current/valid driver’s license
A high school diploma, GED, or proof of completion of high school
Proof of completion of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class
Proof of completion of a Basic First Aid Class
Proof of completion of an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Class or American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Class
"I did some training before and just was always surfing, sailing, just staying active," said Grant. "I think that's why I was able to pass because my lifestyle does fit a lot with the Ocean Safety Department."
Those interested will have to pre-registered on Jan. 24, and Jan. 25, at the Ala Moana Beach Park Ocean Safety Training Center behind lifeguard tower 1B from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
"It's challenging to become a lifeguard. It's not easy, but it's so worth it," stated Paul Franco, Ocean Safety Officer.
