GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A celebration of life for a beacon of light that shined on so many.
Thursday night, a few hundred people gathered in the gym at Page High School to remember 47-year-old Summer Hunter.
She was a teacher her colleagues described as one of a kind.
Nobody knew Ms. Hunter better than her daughter Alyssa.
She says one of the toughest parts about losing her mom is all the milestone moments she won't be here to see.
"I think about all the memories that I was supposed to make with her. Going wedding dress shopping or meeting my kids so it's really hard to think about the memories we could be making," Alyssa said.
Alyssa says her mother passed away on January 6 from underlying health conditions.
"I think about her last weeks and how she had a really good Christmas and New Year's. So that's what really helps me process her leaving," Alyssa said.
Not only was Ms. Hunter a nurturing mother to Alyssa but to many of the people at the celebration of life, especially those wearing purple "Team Voyage' t-shirts.
Team Voyage is the school's mentoring program Ms. Hunter led with former high school football coach Russel Mills, who passed away last February.
Their guidance helped these young Black men standing in front of the crowd gain leadership skills that would change their lives like Ajiri Ejoni, the new advisor of Team Voyage.
"Never thought I could see myself in this type of position to lead this strong group. Or even to lead this village. Because what she and Mills created was a village. And a strong village too," Ejoni said.
As the people in this gym remember Hunter's legacy, her daughter hopes they pass along the wisdom and compassion that made her a pillar in the Page High School community.
"She really just wanted to help the community. She never had any ill will towards anybody. She loved anybody and everybody. It didn't really matter who you were," Alyssa said.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Team Voyage.
