'Preparing for the worst?': City of Bakersfield looking to update its fire emergency master plan

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The threat of the potential for wildfires was seen closer this week after the Hughes Fire forced a temporary shut down of Interstate 5 through the Grapevine Wednesday.
"Can that happen here in Bakersfield? Potentially, yes," said Bakersfield Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Anderson during Wednesday's City Council meeting.

"Those are very scary things," Bakersfield Vice Mayor Manpreet Kaur said. "We want to make sure the residents know that we are doing everything we can to make sure our city is safe."
Kaur proposed a new fire master plan at Wednesday's city council meeting to get ahead of a crisis before it starts.
"What is the condition of our fire department? Are we equipped? What if something of this sort was to happen in the city of Bakersfield? Are we ready?" Kaur said.
Los Angeles was hit hard with its 29 fire departments and a couple hundred fire engines. The lack of water pressure was one of the points of contention after the fire chief said the mayor cut the fire department's budget by more than $17 million.
"Do we have water in our fire hydrants? I get so many of those questions," Mayor Karen Goh said.
Could Bakersfield see wind-driven urban fires like those in LA County? Absolutely
"We have water in our fire hydrants," Anderson said.
"And, we are preparing for the worst?" asked Goh.
"We are preparing for the worst," said Anderson. "We have an emergency operations plan that we will hopefully update soon."
The City Council approved the purchase of two new fire engines that take three years to build in Wisconsin.
Kaur wants a new fire station to be built in south Bakersfield where the city is growing fastest to keep residents and firefighters safe. "They are literally walking into fires for us," said Kaur.
Kaur said the city will discuss the fire emergency plan further at the next budget meeting at City Hall.
