Most players in the NBA know they will get a week off for the All-Star break in mid-February — a time they look forward to as a chance to reenergize for the second half of the season. Not so for Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell will be in the starting lineup from the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star game set for Feb. 16 at Chase Center in San Francisco, it was announced Jan 23 on TNT. This will be Mitchell’s sixth straight All-Star Game and his third with the Cavaliers since being acquired in a trade with the Utah Jazz in September 2022. Jalen Brunson of the Knicks is the other backcourt starter from the East. The East frontcourt starters are Karl-Anthony Towns of the Knicks, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks and Jayson Tatum of the Celtics. The starters from the West are Stephen Curry of the Warriors, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder, Kevin Durant of the Suns, LeBron James of the Lakers and Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets. All-Star teams were selected by a combined vote of the fans, current players and select members of the media. LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets and Mitchell ranked first and second in the fan voting for most of the time since voting opened in mid-December. The fan voting accounts for 50 percent of the voting total. The players and media each account for 25 percent. Evan Mobley, who is currently battling a calf injury, Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland of the Cavaliers are in the running to be All-Star reserves. The reserves will be announced on Jan. 30. Mitchell is averaging 23.2 points a game. That is his lowest average since he was a rookie with the Jazz in 2017-18 when he averaged 20.5 points a game, but he is not concerned his personal numbers are down from years past. Mitchell ranks 22nd in the NBA in scoring. He has scored 20-plus points in 25 games, including 11 games of 30-plus points, and has two double-doubles. The eighth-year guard is the only player in the Eastern Conference averaging 23.0-plus points, .390-plus 3-point field goal percentage (.396), 4.0-plus rebounds (4.5), 4.0-plus assists (also 4.5) and 1.30-plus steals (1.4). Mitchell is also averaging a career-high tying 3.6 three-pointers made per game, which ranks eighth in the NBA. His 148 total three-pointers made are the sixth-most in the league. The Cavaliers (36-7) are tied with Oklahoma City for the best record in the NBA. Mitchell has played in all but two games. His scoring average is down, but his minutes are down, too — down intentionally because Coach Kenny Atkinson wants to do everything he can to give his best players the chance to be fresh for the playoffs. Mitchell is averaging 31.2 minutes a game — more than four minutes a game fewer than a season ago. If he continues at his current pace and avoids a lingering injury, Mitchell will end up playing around 75 games. He has played in 69 or fewer each of the last five seasons. He was limited to 55 games last year because of knee and calf injuries. A calf injury prevented him from playing in the final two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Celtics last spring.
