Woman in her 90s dies, man critical after hit by DUI driver in Fresno, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A 98-year-old woman and 82-year-old man were hit by a suspected DUI driver in Fresno Wednesday, leading to the driver's arrest. Thursday, officers confirmed the woman succumbed to her injuries.
Officers say they responded to the area of Hamilton and Chestnut avenues in Fresno around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday regarding a traffic collision.
Detectives say the driver of a vehicle, identified by police Thursday as 56-year-old Marcelo Gaytan, was traveling northbound on Chestnut when a 98-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man were crossing the intersection and Gayton collided with them.
On Wednesday, officers reported the woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and on Thursday, police said the woman succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital. The man was reported to be suffering from minor injuries on Wednesday, but on Thursday, officers say the man was in critical condition, suffering from injuries to his head, ribs and lungs.
The police department adds Gaytan remained at the scene, but an officer determined he was under the influence of alcohol. Gaytan was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail under suspicion of DUI causing injury/death, DUI over .08% causing injury/death, great bodily injury in the commission of a felony and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
