AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Since it's been so cold this week the snow over the weekend hasn't been melting much and that has made for some slippery spots. There are still plenty of ice and snow patches on driveways and sidewalks left over from the snow this past weekend. Since temperatures haven't made it above freezing the last several days the ice and snow aren't melting away. That has created quite a demand for ice melt at area Hardware stores like Rocky's Ace Hardware in Agawam. How to prevent your pipes from freezing as artic blast in Massachusetts continues Annalise St. Marie of Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam told 22News, "We have a lot of demand for the buckets of ice melt and then the smaller shaker jugs. We got a bunch transferred in and within a day or two they were sold out." They still have a pretty good supply of pet-friendly ice melt as well as shovels and snow blowers as well. With some milder temperatures in the forecast hopefully, some of those ice and snow patches will be disappearing. Selecting the best ice melt to use Rock salt or sodium chloride is the least expensive but can cause damage to concrete sidewalks. Calcium chloride is more expensive but it is also the most effective. It will also work at temperatures as low as 25 degrees below zero. A mixture of magnesium and magnesium acetate is safe for pets.
