OKEFENOKEE, Ga. (WSAV) - Ever wondered how alligators in the Southeast handle cold weather conditions like freezes, snow and ice? The Okefenokee Swamp Park explained that they enter a state called brumation, which is similar to hibernation. They still come up for air and move around if they need to, but overall alligators will stay inactive to conserve energy. Alligators will also use a nifty trick called "icing." When gators do this, they will stick their snouts right above the water's surface before it freezes. This allows for gators to continue breathing without having to fight their way through ice. You can see an Okefenokee ambassador, Coach, displaying icing below. Coach icing.
