NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New Mexico's highest court is asking the legislature to fund some of their critical needs. During Thursday's State of the Judiciary address, Chief Justice David Thomson told lawmakers that the courts need $25 million for security upgrades, and $14 million to give employees a raise. The courts are also asking for $40 million for a new speech-to-text system in courtrooms to get more accurate transcripts.

"For many years, the judicial branch has fallen behind the executive branch. A workforce improvement plan was funded by the legislature, but now we are again fallen behind to the executive as well as the local governments in pay," said Chief Justice Thomson, New Mexico Supreme Court.
The courts also asked for more than $2 million to pay jurors. The judiciary said without that funding, the courts could run out of money for trials.
