X Games return to Aspen this week for possibly the final time
Jan 23, 2025
The X Games Aspen are returning to the city’s Buttermilk Ski Resort this week in Colorado — for potentially the final time — hosting various freeski and snowboard competitions Jan. 23-25. Skiers and snowboarders from all over the globe will vie for medals in one of the sports’ biggest events. This includes 10 athletes from Park City, one snowboarder in Julia Marino and nine skiers. The opening event will be the women’s ski knuckle huck competition, featuring Parkites Marin Hamill and Rell Harwood. Thursday night’s action also includes the men’s ski knuckle huck, the women’s snowboard big air and men’s snowboard superpipe competitions. Every event can be watched on ABC, ESPN and the Roku Channel. Friday’s action begins at 11 a.m. with the women’s snowboard slopestyle competition, with the day holding nine events. Saturday will conclude the event with seven more competitions. The contract for holding the Games in Aspen expires after this year. New York City-based MSP Sports Capital bought a majority stake in the Games in 2022 and has announced no plans yet to keep the competition in its current format or in Aspen after the contract expires. MSP Sports also owns a minority stake in McLaren Racing, whose Formula One team won the series’ constructors title this past season. The athletes will be competing for large sums in prize money. Parkites like Hall, Stevenson and Marino have several gold and other medals to their names at the Games. “We have the Aspen World Cup next week,” said Hall. “It’s gonna be fun to be in Aspen for a couple weeks. I’m really looking forward to all the events I’m doing — knuckle huck, rail jam, big air and slopestyle. I’m most likely doing all four.”Hall added to be on the lookout for a couple of new tricks from him in the slopestyle competition. The 26 year old is coming straight off a podium finish at the Laax Cup’s slopestyle competition last Friday, where Forehand also finished second.
