HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An unspecified number of employees at Kings Dominion were laid off on Wednesday, with full-time employees to receive severance pay, according to officials. According to a spokesperson for the amusement park, Kings Dominion laid off some of its employees on Wednesday, Jan. 22. "I can confirm Kings Dominion made the strategic decision to adjust our staffing levels downward to better align with our future operational needs," the spokesperson said. "We are committed to supporting our team members impacted by the staffing adjustments as they navigate this difficult time ahead." 8News asked the spokesperson if both full-time and part-time employees' positions were eliminated, or just full-time employees. The spokesperson said Kings Dominion does not share these details. However, the spokesperson said the full-time employees at Kings Dominion will receive severance pay. This comes after Six Flags and Cedar Fair, the owner of Kings Dominion, announced a completed merger between the amusement park companies in July 2024. Following the merger, the amusement park also announced that its Berserker and Anaconda rides would be removed prior to the start of the 2025 season. In the summer of 2024, Kings Dominion announced the construction of its new 3,086-foot-long Rapterra wing coaster, which is expected to open in 2025 as part of the park’s 50th anniversary. "Though this is a difficult time of transition for the park, we are still dedicated to providing guests with exciting new experiences and celebrating our 50th anniversary during the 2025 season," the spokesperson said.
