International fan bases growing for Indianapolis sports
Jan 23, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS - 2025 is another major year for Indianapolis sports with teams heading around the globe and some international fans coming to the Circle City.
The Pacers said goodbye to Gainbridge Fieldhouse this week and Bonjour Paris! The blue and gold are going global for their games against the San Antonio Spurs.
People are traveling near and far for a once-in-a-lifetime pair of Pacers games, like Matthew Tobe. He flew from Indiana to France to witness the games in Accor Arena.
“It's just a regular season game, but I think it almost feels like, kind of like a playoff game, in a sense, just because it's all the way over here,” said Tobe.
Fans born and raised in the city of love are also able to experience a Pacers game firsthand. The Pacers put together a city-wide scavenger hunt to win tickets with their first set going to a fan who's never been to a game before.
“It was a young French man who's been a fan for 10 years, who lives here in Paris, and he was so excited to win,” said Mel Raines, the CEO of Pacers Sports and Entertainment.
Even the team is amazed by Parisians rolling out the “gold” carpet to welcome them.
“It's been a whirlwind, honestly, you know, it's my first time out here, so I didn't really know what to expect,” said Pacers center Myles Turner.
According to the team, people from more than 50 different countries bought tickets for the games.
They said that the international fan base is only growing.
“I used to have to tell people that Indianapolis was near Chicago,” said Tobe. “Recently, I've been getting more and more that know, and they'll say, 'Oh the Pacers,' or they'll say, 'Oh Indianapolis 500.'”
This is true for not only the Pacers but also other major sports teams in the circle city.
The Colts just recently announced they will be playing a regular season game in Berlin this year, a first for the NFL.
“I think this is a really great next step in being able to really take our brand worldwide and expand globally and really reach a new audience and build our fan base overseas,” said Stephanie Pemberton, vice president of marketing for the Colts.
In just days, WWE is projected to bring in their 2nd largest international crowd for the Royal Rumble.
Fever fans now stretch across the globe to root for #22.
“As we grow the game as a league around the world, I anticipate you'll see more and more of these kinds of opportunities,” added Raines.
