PLAINFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – WISH-TV celebrates extraordinary teachers in central Indiana with the WISH-TV Golden Apple Award.
The award comes with a $2,000 cash prize from Western Governor’s University (WGU), a trophy, a school supply shopping spree to Teachers’ Treasures, and a surprise visit from the News 8 team with help from WGU Indiana.
At Brentwood Elementary School, Principal Julie Zmijewski says joy is at the heart of everything they do. And one teacher, Mackenzie Cochrun, is the school’s shining example of this mission.
“We (bring) joy to learning here, and she exudes that,” Zmijewski said.
Cochrun, a kindergarten teacher, is January’s Golden Apple Award winner. She may be new to the classroom, but in just one year, she’s already made a lasting impact.
Fellow teacher Brittany Nicora described Cochrun as a rock for her colleagues.
“When I come into work every day, I know I’m going to see her with a big smile, and we’re going to lean on each other for support,” Nicora said. “She’s dedicated to doing the best for her students every day because that’s what she cares about the most.”
Cochrun’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. More than a dozen peers, parents, and community members nominated her for WISH-TV’s January Golden Apple Award.

From student to superstar
Cochrun’s connection to Plainfield schools runs deep. Retired choral director Jonelle Heaton remembers her as a standout leader in high school.
“She was a dance captain in our show choir. Even at that young age, she wasn’t afraid to tackle challenges,” Heaton said.
Her leadership and heart have followed her into the classroom, where her students and coworkers alike admire her passion.

A surprise visit and sweet moments
Our Golden Apple team surprised Cochrun during class with the announcement, along with a $2,000 check from WGU. Overwhelmed, Cochrun admitted she was shocked her family and friends managed to keep the secret.
“Especially my mom! I’m very surprised she could keep a secret this long,” Cochrun joked.
The day was filled with heartfelt messages from loved ones.
“Kenzie, your mom and I are so proud of you,” said her father, Keith Cochrun.
“Everybody needs a Kenzie at their school,” added family friend Rhonda Daum.
Advice for future teachers
As she reflected on the recognition, Cochrun offered words of wisdom to other educators.
“You have to remind yourself of your ‘why’ every day. Why you chose to be in the profession, why you are here, why it’s important. If you can remember all those positive things and tell yourself, ‘I know where I’m supposed to be, and it’s right here,’ then you’ll get through.”
With a smile that brightens her classroom and a heart for her students, Mackenzie Cochrun is the embodiment of why we honor educators through the Golden Apple Award.
