Don Robbs, the legendary radio voice of University of Hawai'i baseball and a pioneer in college sports broadcasting, passed away at the age of 88, his son, fellow sportscaster Scott Robbs, confirmed on Thursday.
Robbs, a UH Sports Circle of Honor inductee in 2015, spent more than 40 years as the "Voice of Rainbow Baseball," calling over 2,000 games, including Hawai'i's 1980 College World Series appearance and Paul Brown's perfect game. Beyond the broadcast booth, Robbs played a vital role in sports media in Hawai'i. As general manager of KKEA 1420AM, he helped establish the station's long-standing radio partnership with UH Athletics. In the 1970s, while at KHVH, he hosted UH coaches' shows and delivered play-by-play commentary for the first statewide Rainbow Wahine volleyball telecast from Blaisdell Arena, a milestone moment for women's collegiate sports.
