PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTW) -- The Lumbee Tribe on Thursday got a big boost in its longtime effort to gain full federal recognition after President Donald Trump signed a memo putting together a plan to grant that status. Trump signed the memo to the US Secretary of the Interior to give the Lumbee Tribe full federal recognition either through legislation or other available means. The Lumbee Tribe was first recognized by the state of North Carolina in 1885. In 1956, then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the 1956 Lumbee Act, which recognized the Lumbee but denied them some federal benefits. The tribe earlier this month inaugurated seven new members and expressed how much it wanted federal recognition. “I am very hopeful, very optimistic about that in regard to our bill,” Chairman John Lowery said. “We have a lot of support within the state and we will use that to catapult that bill across the finish line.” Trump previously promised to support federal recognition of the tribe.
