GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - This past Saturday, January 18, a Racine woman, Linda Knight, decided to go through with the decision to adopt a dog. After spending a lot of time searching online for the right match, she stumbled across a five-month-old hound dog named Priscilla. Linda has since changed the name to Laney. "I had it in my schedule to go there on Wednesday when I had free time and see if I could adopt her." She showed Glenn a picture of Laney and told him about her plans to pick her up on Wednesday. Glenn then encouraged Linda to go to Green Bay that second, to ensure the dog is not adopted by anyone else. "But that's three hours and I came all this way," Knight responded; however, Glenn told her, 'If you love that puppy you have to go get it.' "It was a bit of a hurried situation," Knight said. While arriving in Green Bay from Chicago she realized she left her purse with her wallet, back with her friends in Chicago. "And I get over halfway and I look at my passenger seat and it looks a little empty and I look at the floorboard and I'm like what's missing? And I was like, 'No, I don't have my backpack or my wallet and won't be able to adopt the dog.'" After a quick phone call to her friend Glenn to ensure her belongings were safe, Glenn offered to pay for the adoption over the phone with a credit card when Linda got to the Humane Society. When she and Laney united, Linda was confident she had found the perfect match. As peaceful as it seemed, one more fork was left in the road. While traveling back to Racine from Green Bay after successfully adopting her new family member, she noticed she was running low on gas. "Right away I went into problem-solving mode, 'What are my options,' stop at a gas station, the clerk won't let me pay via Zelle, ask some strangers, that'll be pretty uncomfortable but that's a possibility," Knight said. While quickly weighing out her options, she noticed cars from the Brown County Sheriff's Office, in the middle of the highway monitoring traffic. "So, I pulled over and waved out my window and he blinked his lights, so I know he saw me," Knight said. "When the traffic cleared, he drove up, pulled up behind me and came up to my window to ask what was wrong." After she explained all the hoops she had gone through to get to that moment, Deputy Daniel Calloway swiftly went into action. "He told me that the next exit had a Kwik Trip and they bought me a Kwik Trip gift card for $25." "I never expect it back when someone is kind, but it blows me away when people do things they didn't have to do in any way, shape or form," Knight said. "It helps to bring people together and it helps you to have more belief in your community and other people." Thanks to the Brown County Sheriff's Office, Linda and her new puppy Laney made it home just fine.
