(WFRV)—U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad for the Eastern District of Wisconsin announced that a Wisconsin man pleaded guilty on January 16 to tax fraud. Vikram Naik's guilty plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Joseph Stadtmueller months after a federal grand jury indicted Naik on three counts of false tax returns. Scam Alert: Wisconsin deputies debunk door to door ‘serial killer’ threat on Facebook groups The indictment occurred on October 8, 2024. According to the indictment and plea deal, Naik willingly made and subscribed under perjury penalties to individual income tax returns from 2017-2019. Naik's withholding amounts were far less than he reported, and his taxable income and tax owed were greater than his original report. According to the release, from 2016 to 2019, Naik inflated the federal tax withholdings on his 1040 forms. Naik also falsely reported on his W-2s from his company, Naik Consulting, Inc., that his federal income tax withheld $60,000 in 2017, $61,500 in 2018 and $146,000 in 2019 from his wages. Wisconsin detectives make multiple arrests in Internet Crimes Against Children investigations The false reports resulted in his 1040s claiming he didn't owe any taxes, instead that he was to receive heavy refunds. Naik faces up to three years in prison and $250,00 in fines.
