INDIANAPOLIS — Dozens of protestors gathered at the Indiana Statehouse Thursday and called on lawmakers to reconsider an immigration notice bill that’s now one step closer to passing out of the Indiana House. ”It’s invoking fear in our community,” Carolina Castoreno with the Indiana Latino Democratic Caucus (INDLC) said. ”There are so many people who will be affected by a bill like this simply based on racial profiling.” If HB 1393 becomes law, state and local law enforcement would need to report names, addresses and other identifying information of arrested individuals suspected of being in the country illegally to ICE. One of the bill’s co-authors, State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour), said one of his goals is to lower human trafficking numbers in Indiana. ”This is an emotional topic, I get that,” Lucas said leading up to the committee vote. “But we have to do something to turn around the horrors of what we’ve been seeing and what we’ve been witnessing.” Dozens of protestors voiced their concerns at the Indiana Statehouse following the vote. ”I have friends and loved ones who are going to be impacted by this bill,” an unnamed protestor said. ”We’re done with lawmakers trying to spread us apart,” another protestor said. ”This is just wrong; it’s just blatant racism and we cannot continue,” Leslie Salazar with the INDLC said. But Lucas argued something has to be done to address longstanding, problematic immigration policies at the federal level. ”It is not racist,” Lucas said. “It couldn’t be further away from being racist. This is just a simple determination of somebody that has been arrested for a felony or misdemeanor of whether they are here legally or illegally.” The bill passed 9-2 out of committee, with one Republican (State Rep. Becky Cash) casting a “no” vote. “How people feel about it, any information that might come out that could either improve the bill or take away from it," Lucas said. "We’re just beginning that process, so it has a long way to go." It’s unclear when exactly the bill will be heard on the House floor at this time.
