JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) -- A Florida police officer will soon be out of a job after accidentally firing a man's gun, hitting him, during a traffic stop.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Tuesday, in a news release, that on Dec. 13, 2024, one of its officers stopped a vehicle for running a red light. Two other officers, including one identified as M. Cardwell, responded to assist.

Officers suspected the vehicle may have been stolen after noticing that the car's steering column was damaged.

Officials said the driver was cooperative and told them he had a gun on his person. When he got out of the vehicle, Cardwell went to remove the gun, which the man had holstered.
"She tugged on the gun the first time, and then she tugged again, and that's when I told her, 'Hey, let me just unloosen my belt because it's tight,'" Arrington, flanked by his attorney, said during a December 27 news conference.
The officer "had difficulty removing" the gun, and while trying to do so, it fired, striking the driver in the leg, the sheriff's office said.
"When Officer Cardwell was finally able to remove the firearm from the holster, she unintentionally placed multiple fingers inside the trigger guard of the firearm, causing the firearm to discharge," according to the sheriff's office.
Officers lowered the driver to the ground and called for help before putting a tourniquet on his leg.
A JSO internal investigation resulted in Cardwell being charged with incompetence and the agency says it is starting her termination process.
Arrington's attorney, Kay Harper Williams, said that they are pursuing legal action.
