Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, criticized President Trump, arguing there is “nothing heroic” about him declassifying his grandfather’s assassination documents. “The truth is a lot sadder than the myth — a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Not part of an inevitable grand scheme,” Schlossberg posted to social platform X. “Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back,” he said in the post. “There’s nothing heroic about it.” On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order directing the release of federal documents related to three assassinations: the former president, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. Within 15 days, the director of national intelligence and the attorney general will present a plan for the “full and complete release” of records related to John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination. The order states that while there is no act from Congress directing the release of information, it is “in the public interest.” While campaigning in the recent presidential election, Trump promised he would declassify the remaining documents. He made the same promise during his first term in the White House, but ultimately kept some documents hidden for intelligence reasons. Schlossberg, who is a Democrat, was a supporter of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign against Trump. He and other members of his family have criticized his cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The HHS nominee, whose father was also killed by an assassin in 1968, previously said there is “overwhelming evidence” that the CIA was involved in his uncle’s death. Trump was inaugurated on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20. His son, Martin Luther King III, said his father would be “quite disappointed” with the current state of the world but not surprised.
