An employee at a Homewood day care has been charged with endangering the life of a child for allegedly putting a 4-year-old inside a garbage can as a form of punishment in below-freezing temperatures, police said Thursday. Homewood police said 58-year-old Anna Petrou is charged with the misdemeanor and has been released pending a court date. Police said at about 1 p.m. Jan. 13, Petrou allegedly placed the child in an alley of the day care, in the 18700 block of Dixie Highway, for about 20 seconds, then brought the child inside and placed the child in an empty garbage can as a form of punishment. Police said at the time the child was brought into the alley, the temperature was about 19 degrees.
