Gage Park $1.28m Sky Trail moving forward
Jan 23, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - It's official, a new million-dollar-plus playground is coming to Gage Park.
On Thursday morning, Shawnee County Commissioners approved a $1,280,000 contract between Parks and Recreation and RCI Adventure Products. It marks phase 2 of the playland improvement plan for the park, moving forward on an 'Aerial Adventure Trail'.
That sky trail will travel the length of the playland.
Parks and Recreation Director Tim Laurent says the team has been working on making the project accessible for the last 6 months, but they've run into some key issues.
“It’s about 15 feet in the air, so to get folks up there is the trick," Laurent said. "And we found that we were going to more than double the cost of this project to be able to do that.”
While the entire sky trail won't meet accessibility standards, there will be pieces throughout that will, including a toddler area.

Other upcoming additions to the playground include a low-to-the-ground zipline, climbing apparatus and swing set. The team is hoping to get those pieces up for play by mid-March, and the sky trial project started this summer.
