WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Warwick Police Department is lending a helping hand to officers in Los Angeles who have been impacted by devastating wildfires.
The Warwick Police Department is launching a campaign to support LAPD officers who lost their homes and belongings in the recent Palisades fires.
“20 officers that are on active duty have lost their homes. Hopefully, a lot of these gift cards can get them back on their feet, provide them with the essentials they need—food, clothing,” said Sgt. John Zaborski of the Warwick Police Department.
They’re collecting gift cards for necessities like food, clothing and household supplies.
Gift card donations are being accepted now through February 10 at Warwick police headquarters, located on Veterans Memorial Drive.
Places like Amazon, Target or Walmart are best, so the LAPD officers in need can use them on necessities.
A member of the Warwick Police Department will personally travel to Los Angeles next month to hand-deliver the gift cards to LAPD officers, bringing a message of solidarity and support.
“As a community, I hope it becomes uplifting to know that no matter where you are in the country, small Rhode Island, east coast, west coast, middle of the country, we are out there and we are helping those in need,” said Sgt Zaborski.
The Palisades fire has been burning since January 7, destroying over 12,000 structures and scorching more than 40,000 acres.
At least 28 people have lost their lives, and firefighters are still working to contain the flames.
