Lance Smith founded Vermont SportsCar in 1988, and for the past two decades it has built race cars for Subaru Motorsports USA, racking up 18 national rally championships. Seven Days’ Eva Sollberger got a tour of VSC’s $12 million, 75,000-square-foot facility in Milton and saw its award-winning Subarus. The parking lot at Vermont SportsCar in Milton is — like most parking lots in Vermont — filled with weathered Subarus. Inside the lobby, there are three sparkling clean, souped-up Subarus emblazoned with decals and logos. Unlike the vehicles in the lot, two of these have raced in rallies around the world, and one — the Airslayer — was driven by action sports legend Travis Pastrana and jumped over a speedboat in a gymkhana video with 68 million views. In 1988, Lance Smith founded Vermont SportsCar in a Colchester warehouse. He grew up in Chittenden County working on specialty cars and had a passion for rallies which sent him around the world learning about the motorsport. For the past two decades, VSC has teamed up with Subaru of America to manage its racing division, Subaru Motorsports USA, which has dominated the rallying motorsport, racking up 18 national championships. In 2018, VSC opened its $12 million, 75,000-square-foot facility in Milton. Its eight work bays resemble a gleaming modern art gallery, with high ceilings and floors you could eat off. VSC employs 65 people who design, engineer and fabricate Subarus for rally, rallcross and gymkhana stunt videos which get millions of online views. Because there are no rallies held in Vermont, the company has kept a low profile. In her latest episode of “Stuck in Vermont,” Seven Days senior multimedia producer Eva Sollberger got a tour of the Milton facility with Smith at the start of the New Year. Subaru and rally enthusiasts can schedule free tours on Fridays. Filming date: 1/2/25 Music: TrackTribe, “Motorbike” Unicorn Heads, “Rolling Heads” This episode of Stuck in Vermont was supported by EastRise Credit Union…
