Buffalo Bills flag 'only thing that survived' after large fire in Central NY

OVID, N.Y. (WSYR) — Italian Kitchen was one of the six businesses destroyed in Ovid after a fire burned an entire block to the ground.
The next morning, when owner Ron Carmona and General Manager Felix Jordan returned to what was once their bustling business, all they found was a massive pile of debris – and their Buffalo Bills flag, frozen, standing proudly in front of the devastation.
"This the only thing that survived right here!" Jordan exclaimed as the pair held the heavy Buffalo Bills flag.
At the time of the fire, Carmona and Jordan were making pizzas and subs at their restaurant.
"I saw a car cop parked in front of us with lights on and I came out and saw the smoke coming out of the apartment above the Big M," Carmona explained.
Soon after, windows exploded and first responders began evacuating people from the buildings. Carmona and Jordan took those people in, giving them pizza, coffee, and water until the fire threatened Italian Kitchen and they were told to evacuate.
Carmona and Jordan both watched for hours as the fire continued to rage and burn their business to the ground while firefighters worked persistently against tough conditions to put it out.
"The conditions were horrible it was minus five degrees and the water and the wind and it was so hot and intense they ran out of water they had to bring in tankers from different locations," Carmona shared.
One of the men working on the scene the morning after the fire cut the pole holding the flag using an angle grinder, so Carmona and Jordan could have it.
"That's why we're holding the flag. This is all us right here. The only thing that survived right here and we're going to keep it!" they both declared.
The two Bills fans have been best friends for over a decade. They consider one another to be brothers.
"I'll tell you what. Every year we have to take the flags back inside because they get eliminated," Carmona said. "This year two games away the flags are still up front and they're going to be out front forever!"
Carmona and Jordan carried their flag up the street to the Seneca Coffee House, which Carmona also owns. They placed the frozen flag proudly outside of that shop.
"It makes us happy. It makes us happy because it's our New York team and without them, we're not going to smile. They're doing so well. And our community is Buffalo Bills," Carmona said.
Carmona wants to try to send the flag to the Buffalo Bills for inspiration ahead of this weekend's game.
