Oscarnominated ‘The Substance’ tops new DVD releases

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- If you are scrambling to see films that were nominated for an Oscar, one film that picked up five nods - including one for Best Picture - is among this week’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases.
“The Substance” Grade B+: Coralie Fargeat’s film is a tale of horror amplified by dealing with the real-world emotion of vanity. Demi Moore plays a woman who is not happy with the aging process and takes a very dangerous approach to rolling back the years.
The performance by Moore and some horror moments that range from terrifying to comical were enough to earn the movie five Oscar nominations including a spot in the Best Picture category.
“Venom: The Last Dance” Grade C+: Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom – the sentient alien symbiote with a liquid-like form living in Eddie’s body – leave on their “Thelma & Louise” journey from Mexico. Every law enforcement officer in the world is looking for Eddie following events that unfolded in San Francisco in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” So, they decided to travel across the country to visit the Statue of Liberty.
The film finally gets around to being the kind of action-packed production fans of the comic book-inspired genre have come to expect. It just takes most of the movie to get there as novice director Kelly Marcel shows more interest in making this a buddy road trip tale than a pure action film.
“Smile 2” Grade B-: The production – that could also have been called “Grin and Scare It” – finds that sweet spot of having just enough loud noises, scary characters and gore to appease most fans of the original film. The downside of that storytelling middle ground is that the sequel to the 2022 film offers nothing new. When the third film gets released – and it will be released – there will be no need to have seen the sequel.
“Smile 2” isn’t original enough to put it among the better offerings in the horror genre. At the same time, it doesn’t have enough problems to keep audiences away. It is simply an average tale of horror amped up slightly by intense scenes of gore and a performance by Scott that is far better than the material deserves.
“The Heretic” Grade B+: Advertising for the movie suggests this is just another horror film. It does brush up against many tropes of the genre, but it is elevated to a much more intellectually terrifying level through a brilliant script by writers/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
This is a movie that suggests fear can be generated through a series of everyday events if they are presented through smart dialogue and a group of actors who are very capable of getting across their sinister or sincere nature with a look. The fact that all three of the actors are so good in playing their roles is the biggest factor in making the movie work.
“Here” Grade C+: The film stares at one location ranging through a time span that runs from the time of dinosaurs to the present. Scenes show the same spot going from an Ice Age wasteland to becoming a settled area and finally a home.
The deeply creative mind of director Robert Zemeckis ends up working against him. His decision to look at life from a stationary point of view that includes creepily de-aging his main cast becomes such a monumental distraction that the emotional soul of the production is overwhelmed.
The talents of Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are wasted.
Also new on DVD and Blu-ray as of Jan. 21.
