The best ways to receive severe weather alerts
Jan 23, 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Meteorologist Tommy House sat down with Meteorologist Paul Yura, Warning Coordinator at the National Weather Service in San Antonio/Austin, to discuss ways to stay informed when severe weather is in the forecast.
Meteorologist Tommy House: Last week, we discussed the types of severe weather. This week, I want to focus on preparedness. So, how can viewers stay ready during the severe weather season?
Meteorologist Paul Yura: The key is to be truly weather aware. It may sound simple, but it takes effort. A big part of that is having multiple ways to receive weather warnings. A NOAA Weather Radio is still one of the best options. Most people have smartphones these days, so make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts on your phone. Many phones allow you to set notifications, so just be sure those are enabled. Also, keep your phone charged, especially overnight if you know severe weather is expected.
It's also important to practice with your family to know where a safe place is, not only at home but also at work. Make sure you're familiar with the safest area in your workplace in case of strong winds or a tornado, as these events can happen quickly.
House: Now, let's talk about specific ways to get notifications, like apps or text messaging.
Yura: NOAA Weather Radio remains a reliable source, broadcasting 24/7. Many cities and counties also offer mass notification systems. In the Austin area, for example, you can sign up for WarnCentralTexas.org to receive weather warnings and emergency alerts for your location. The FEMA app is another great option, allowing you to save multiple locations and receive National Weather Service watches and warnings.
Additionally, many media partners have apps that can send weather alerts. It's important to sign up with trusted sources of weather information and use those apps, as they will funnel the weather warnings we issue directly to you.
