The NYPD has released surveillance footage of a pair of men sought for yanking a chain off a 53-year-old father in Coney Island moments before he died in the back of a livery car. Michael Shelonchik, whose birthday was the day before his death, got out of the car for hire near a bank at W. Fifth St. and Neptune Ave. about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, cops said. A police source said he had traveled to the area to buy drugs. After the crooks got away with Shelonchik’s chain the victim got back in the livery, announced he had been robbed and asked to be driven home to Bergen Beach. Third St. and Avenue Y in Gravesend when Shelonchik suffered an apparent medical episode and had trouble breathing, police said. Medics rushed him unresponsive to Maimonides Medical Center but he could not be saved. Doctors suspect he may have suffered an overdose, according to a police source. The city Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine Shelonchik’s cause of death. The two masked men, one dressed entirely in black and the other wearing a black hoodie and blue jogging pants with a distinctive black-and-white design, can be seen on the video released by the NYPD walking around a corner and into a store, their hands in their pockets. Cops are asking the public’s help identifying them and tracking them down. Shelonchik, who worked as a clothing wholesaler, is survived by his wife of more than 30 years and daughters Taylor, 27 and Lexi, 20. “He was the best dad in the whole world to two daughters,” Lexi Shelonchik said Wednesday. “He was very kind. He was very loving.” Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
