'A surprise': Fresno community shocked to learn son arrested for mother's death
Jan 22, 2025
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno Police announced the city’s first homicide of 2025 after 62-year-old Shirla Ramirez was found dead in her home Monday. Fresno Police have identified 35-year-old Brad Ramirez, the victim’s son, as the killer.
Shirla Ramirez’s birthday was this past Sunday. Her co-workers sent her birthday messages, but no one got a reply back. They got so worried they called a welfare check on Shirla.
“We received a call for service at the East Cortland address. A coworker was worried because Shirla didn't show up to work, and that was very unlike her,” Interim Police Chief Mindy Casto said.
“It comes as a surprise here because everything is quiet around here. I mean, there's hardly anything that happens around here. This is just a shock,” Shirla’s neighbor Ralph said. “She was just a nice lady, you know, to see me, tell her hi, bye. You know, that’s about it. She probably walked up and down a couple of times and that's about it. We hardly ever see her.”
Shirla called off of work last Friday and had not been heard from all weekend. Her birthday was on Sunday, and she did not reply to any birthday messages.
“They contacted police to have a welfare check conducted at Shirley's residence. And when officers arrived, they found that the front door was ajar. They went in and found Shirley in the back of the house, bloodied up and deceased,” Casto said.
As officers were investigating, they learned that Shirla’s car was found in west Fresno County by California Highway Patrol after being involved in a collision, linking Shirla’s son to her death.
“Brad Ramirez, 35-years-old, was found nearby where the car was located by Fresno County deputies, where they contacted him. And he ran from them and was taken into custody and detained. He received treatment at CRC and upon release he was booked for murder in the Fresno County Jail,” Casto said.
Her quiet neighborhood was left rattled.
“I just hope that everything just stays safe around it for everybody, not just here, but around everywhere,” Ralph said.
Detectives are still working to determine a motive. Those who have any information that would assist the investigation are asked to contact Fresno Police.
