NC residents enjoy snow, brace for icy day after

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) — From sledding to shoveling, residents in North Carolina were out and about making the most of what is a very rare snow day.
"It's definitely nice to be able to enjoy it when it actually happens and it actually sticks," said Elizabeth City resident Addison Jernigan. "It's real nice.”
Those young and old enjoyed the snowfall. Some like the Mayers have been making it a family affair.
"We had a great time tonight, the missus and I still went out for our walk and the kids were outside playing in the snow all day, so it's a treat, absolutely,” said Elizabeth City resident Matt Mayer.
But this treat could turn tricky, as cold temperatures overnight could lead to icy commutes. That's why many are reminding everyone to take caution, especially if you're driving into the early morning hours because roads and highways will be icy.
"Definitely black ice, it's gonna freeze over again, so be careful," Mayer said.
It's advice his sons would agree with.
"It is pretty dangerous," said Peter Mayer. "I was biking around on my bike and I slipped and fell, so it is quite dangerous and slippery."
And remember: take caution, use extra time to stop before approaching other vehicles and go slow.
"Just this morning there was a guy in a Jeep with mud tires and he was sliding around the corners because you can't do that," Tim Mayer said.
If you have the day off of work or school tomorrow, stay inside, and have some fun.
Another tip — make sure you have at least a half-tank of gas if you're driving anywhere in this cold weather to protect your vehicle's fuel system.
