HANFORD, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Several pets are looking for homes after Kings SPCA said they are being forced to shut down its animal shelter in Hanford. The 61-year-old no-kill shelter announced Wednesday that they are closing their doors at their facility located in the Hanford Mall due to a lack of funding. Their final day of operation is Feb. 28. In the meantime, the shelter is looking to rehome all of the animals currently under their care. “We are facing an overwhelming number of owner surrenders and animal abandonments, combined with a significant decline in financial support,” said Timarie Hansen, Board of Directors VP. "Unfortunately, we are not alone; other organizations in the county are experiencing the same struggles." Maximum capacity: 300 dogs waiting to be adopted at Fresno Animal Center Kings SPCA encourages anyone who wishes to help to consider donating, volunteering, or adopting a pet. Some of the pets currently up for adoption can be found here (adoption fees may not reflect the website; the shelter says they have reduced fees to $100 for cats and $175 for dogs). The non-profit will also be hosting a series of online auctions on Facebook to liquidate assets; they say proceeds will go toward the continued care and placement of the animals and to help ensure a smooth transition for their staff. Despite the imminent closure, Kings SPCA says they will continue to seek grants and donations with the goal of reopening a shelter facility in the future.
