Salem police shot and killed a man who led them on foot chase into an apartment complex at the Salem-Keizer border late Wednesday morning.  Around 11:30 a.m., “officers were in a foot pursuit of a wanted adult male suspect,” according a Salem Police department news release Wednesday afternoon, which didn’t explain what he was accused of. The man fled into the Laurel Gate Court Apartments at 3355 River Rd. N. and toward a residential unit while armed with a handgun, police said. The statement didn’t mention whether the suspect brandished the gun. “The officers confronted the suspect and shots were fired. The suspect was struck. Despite life-saving measures employed by responding officers, the suspect died at the scene,” according to the statement.  No officers were injured. “The names of the suspect and the officers involved will not be released at this time,” police said. Such identifications are typically released by the law enforcement agency assigned to investigate police shootings. The shooting drew a large police response to the apartment complex, with at least 20 police vehicles still at the scene nearly two hours later. Salem police said that the Marion County Law Enforcement Officer Deadly Use of Force Plan is in effect for the shooting. The county requires that a police agency not involved in a fatal police shooting has to conduct the investigation. The Oregon State Police will investigate and provide future updates about the shooting. Marion County also requires that “involved officers” – which under state law includes both officers that fire shots or witness another do so – be placed on paid administrative leave during investigations.
