Here’s a roundup for the week from Thursday, Jan. 23, to Wednesday, Jan. 29. *Starred events are free to attend, although they may include ticketed components or a suggested donation. “The Little Mermaid” at McNary High School Thursday, Jan. 23-Feb. 1: Join McNary High School’s theatre department for their first performance of the musical “The Little Mermaid.” The musical tells the classic story of Ariel, a mermaid longing to live in the human world. The musical is directed by theater teacher Tom Cavanaugh and will perform eight shows over two weekends.  There will be 7 p.m. shows on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays along with additional 2 p.m. shows on both Saturdays. Tickets are $11.50 for students, seniors and children and $13.60 for adults. Students will perform the musical in McNary High School’s auditorium, 595 Chemawa Rd. N. Jazz, classical quartet show Thursday, Jan. 23: Saxophonist Idit Shner brings her quartet of musicians to Salem for a night of jazz and classical music. Alongside Shner will be musicians Jack Radsliff on guitar, Patrick Golichnik on bass and Michael Raynor on drums. The show will take place at Christo’s Pizzeria and Lounge, 1108 Broadway St. N.E. The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20. “The Right to Read” film showing *Saturday, Jan. 25: Join a free screening of “The Right to Read,” a documentary about the impacts of teaching children how to read. The screening is organized by the Salem-Keizer branch of the NAACP with help from the Salem-Keizer School District. Following the screening, there will be a moderated discussion about the documentary. The screening will start at 2:45 p.m. inside the Loucks Auditorium at the Salem Public Library, 585 Liberty St. S.E. There is no registration required. Highland Peace Walk *Saturday, Jan. 25: Walk through the Highland neighborhood as part of a community effort to promote peace and raise awareness about local violence. The walk is co-hosted by the Highland Neighborhood Association, Highland Elementary School, Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School and the Salem Alliance Church. The walk will start at 4:30 p.m. on the garden center side of the Fred Meyer located at 2855 Broadway St. N.E. More information is available on Facebook.  Bachata at Xicha Brewing *Saturday, Jan. 25: Spend an evening learning to dance bachata at Xicha Brewing North. At 7 p.m., there will be a group lesson and afterwards there will be a social dance. The brewery is at 2195 Hyacinth St. N.E.  90s rock cover band *Saturday, Jan. 25: Shades of Brew is hosting a free night of rock music from the 1990s performed by cover band Smells Like Midlife Crisis. In addition to music, the event will have a pod of food carts to choose from as well as drinks on tap. The night of rock-and-roll will go from 7-10 p.m. at Shades of Brew, located at 4743 Lancaster Dr. N.E. No registration is needed. More information is available on Facebook.  Moms Unhinged comedy show Tuesday, Jan. 28: Three moms come together to perform a night of standup comedy focused on experiences of motherhood, midlife crises, marriage and divorce. The standup show “Moms Unhinged” has sold out shows around the U.S. and returns to Salem with comedians Amy Brown, Andrea Marie and Mandy Simonson. The show will take place at the Grand Theatre, located at 187 High St. N.E. and will start at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $20-28.  Contact reporter Madeleine Moore: [email protected].
