This story was updated following information from Salem police and a statement from Cherriots. A Cherriots bus hit a pedestrian early Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Northeast Union and High streets.  Salem police posted to social media around 2 p.m. that the pedestrian died from the collision and there is an ongoing traffic fatality investigation. The pedestrian has not yet been identified by police. A Cherriots transit operator was driving a bus on route 19, said Cherriots manager Allan Pollock. Routes 9 and 19 remain on detour due to a police shooting on the Salem-Keizer border late Wednesday morning, according to Pollock. The operator was placed on paid administrative leave, according to a statement from Cherriots. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the family members of those involved,” Pollock said in the statement. He also said that Cherriots is fully cooperating with the police investigation into the crash. Northeast High Street is closed until further notice between Northeast Division and Marion Streets, the post said. Northeast Union Street will also be closed until further notice between Northeast Liberty and Church Streets.  The crash was initially reported by police on social media around 1:20 p.m. This is the Salem area’s second fatal crash of 2025, according to coverage by Salem Reporter. This story will be updated as more information becomes available. Contact reporter Madeleine Moore: [email protected].
