Hun girls basketball hits 17 3pointers in win over Lawrenceville
Jan 22, 2025
PRINCETON — When a basketball team hits 3-point field goals as well as the Hun School varsity girls, it is easy to understand why the Raiders are winning so much.
Hun drained a season best 17 3-pointers Wednesday in a Mid-Atlantic Prep League game versus Lawrenceville in the Grant M. Shipley Pavilion.
Those 51 points alone would have been enough to get past the Big Red this day. Instead, the final went on to be, 70-29, with nine more two-point field goals and a foul shot mixed in.
“Our goal is to hit 15 a game,” third-year head coach Sean Costello said. “If we can hit those, it changes some things.”
That change came early and often Wednesday. Five-foot-seven junior guard Addi McNally connected on two 3-pointers in the game’s first 54 seconds to set the tone. McNally hit pay dirt six times in the game; half of those in the first quarter as the Raiders opened a 27-5 lead.
“I feel it’s all about confidence,” McNally said. “I think every shot’s going in.”
There is good reason for her approach. McNally’s six treys in a game is her second highest total this season. She hit seven against Canada’s Lo-Ellen Park Prep Dec. 13 in Washington, D.C.’s She Got Game Classic.
McNally has drained five in a game three other times this season to give her a total of 46, which currently leads the area. Lawrenceville sophomore Aryana Iyer (44) and Hightstown High freshman Hayley DeKok (43) are right there with her.
“Addi was really hitting them,” Costello said. “We have shot the ball pretty well as a team this year.”
As a result, Hun is 16-5 overall as well as 3-1 thus far in the seven-team MAPL with the league tournament beginning Feb. 13 at home sites before the semifinals and final are held at the Lawrenceville School Feb. 15 & 16, respectively.
McNally, who led all scorers with 18 points, had plenty of help inside and out with junior point guard Gabby D’Agostino following with 15 points and freshman Sienna Golizio scoring 13 (both had three 3-pointers). Freshman Meso Nwobu and senior Amira Pinkett were next with 10 and nine points, respectively, including a pair of treys apiece.
“On a day like today, we work on passing the ball and getting good ball movement,” said McNally, who would like to play basketball and field hockey in college.
The 1-14 Big Red, meanwhile, seemed to be moving the ball around well yesterday, but were not nearly as accurate, hitting just 12 field goals.
“I think we work really well as a team,” said L’ville’s 5-foot-10 sophomore forward Audrey Shueh, who rejoined the club in January after a bout with pneumonia. “It’s awesome to be back. My teammates are really nice.”
Shueh helped out with four baskets for eight points, plus eight rebounds and two blocked shots. That put her second in scoring on Lawrenceville behind 5-8 junior guard/forward Yijia Song, who also hit four shots for nine points (one 3-pointer). Iyer drained two more treys in the game for six points.
