PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles are hanging their Super Bowl hopes on Jalen Hurts’ health. The hobbled quarterback was present at Wednesday’s walkthrough and expects to be on the field in Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders — the team that gave him a concussion last month. “It’s just been progressing, taking it a day at a time,” said Hurts, who suffered a knee injury in the divisional round against the Los Angeles Rams. “I was able to participate today and be involved in stuff, so I’m just taking it a day at a time.” When asked if he feels like he’s on track to play Sunday, he gave a one-word response, nodding his head: “Yeah.” Rookie cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, who exited with a shoulder injury against the Rams, was also at the walkthrough and told reporters in the locker room that he’s planning to play, too. Mitchell and the Eagles’ defense will be facing rookie sensation Jayden Daniels at quarterback for the third time this season. “I think he’s able to win different ways,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “He can win with his arm. He can win with his legs. He can extend plays and make a play with his legs. He can extend a play and make a play with his arm. “You can see that he’s calm and cool in the biggest moments, and got a lot of respect for how he’s playing. He’s obviously had a great year, and they’re doing a great job with him over there. Their coaching staff is doing a great job with him over there. “Any time you play somebody multiple times, you’re going to know things about them,” Sirianni said. “But again, going back, they’re going to have new wrinkles for us. Like I said, we’re going to have new wrinkles for them. It’ll be a game of, ‘Hey, they’re doing this off that,’ and we’re going to have to adjust to things.” Daniels has a 116.2 QB rating through two games this postseason, completing 69.7 percent of his passes, with four touchdowns and no picks. But he also knows how daunting the Birds’ defensive front is, led by Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Nolan Smith and Josh Sweat. “I think you’ve obviously got to pay attention to those types of players,” Daniels said. “Obviously they’re at the top positions for a reason, but just the group as a whole, how do they rush together? Because it’s not always just independent one-on-ones. They run stunts and stuff like that, so you’ve got to pay attention to that. I pay attention to it but I don’t focus too much on it. I’m very aware of it though. “Vets who have been in this position before … you kind of just lean on them to ask questions,” he said. “Obviously it’s the final four, so there’s going to be a lot more eyes on these teams. You can get out of whack listening to the media and stuff like that. But if you keep same routine and stay consistent, it’ll be worked out.” *** Saquon Barkley’s 78-yard touchdown in the snow in the fourth quarter of last week’s divisional playoff game against the Rams holds a special place for him. “That’s probably my favorite touchdown so far of my football careers, since I was a little kid,” he said. “Just the moment, the timing of it, the conversations that I had with myself, the stuff that I’d been working on kind of all just came together in that moment. “But it teaches you a lesson, even in that moment, there were still 4 minutes or however much time is left, and before you know it, we’re at the mercy of (Rams quarterback) Matthew Stafford driving down the field. It’s one of my favorite moments, but it’s playoff football. You’ve got to make the play and move on.” *** Five Eagles have been nominated for Associated Press awards: Barkley for MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, linebacker Zack Baun for Defensive Player of the Year, Mitchell for Defensive Rookie of the Year, cornerback Cooper DeJean for Defensive Rookie of the Year, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for Assistant Coach of the Year. —— Follow Christiaan DeFranco on X at @the_defranc.
