Lovingly labeled as an Albuquerque cycling champion, an avid environmentalist, and a family man, Chuck Malagodi was killed Sunday after a driver hit him in southeast Albuquerque then took off. "His mission was to make this world better and I think he did," said Chuck's wife, Hisako. His death was a loss not only felt by his family but the entire community. "I'm sure many kids from Albuquerque may remember him but he would go out with his adventure leaders and he would set up this biking course and he would teach kids how to approach situations on the road," said Angelina. For 25 years, Malagodi ran the city's outdoor recreation program, created a safe cycling curriculum for elementary and junior high students, and helped connect kids with bikes through Free Bikes 4 Kidz. His daughter said his biggest accomplishment was the Esperanza Community Bike Shop. "He took that library and turned it into a community center where kids could learn how to be mechanics. kids could just have a space to hang out and be safe," said Angelina. His goal, Angelina said, was to get everyone outside. "I think I'm always going to cry when I get on my bike because I know he would be singing Willie Nelson on the road again every time we got on the bike," said Angelina. The people he touched along the way haven't forgotten his kindness. "In true New Mexican, you know we got this spirit they just, they set everything up for me they ran it by me and I said that looks amazing and we're just trying to take it minute by minute," said Angelina. While Angelina said the loss is overwhelming there is only one way for her to move forward. "Maybe now is going to be my time to take care of my family but then start incorporating more time to give back to the community because I don't know how to move on in my life anymore if I'm not living in his footsteps," said Angelina. The family is honoring Malagodi with a 10-mile memorial ride this Saturday starting at Balloon Fiesta Park at 2 p.m. Albuquerque police are still searching for the person responsible for hitting Malagodi. APD said the next morning they found the truck responsible, a white Dodge Ram. However, they have not found the driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP. The City of Albuquerque's Parks and Recreation Department sent this statement: We are deeply saddened by the loss of Chuck Malagodi, whose dedication to outdoor recreation, youth education, and bicycle safety, profoundly impacted our community. Chuck was a tireless advocate whose hard work and vision were instrumental to the success of the Esperanza Bicycle Safety Education Center, and the expansion of bicycle safety programs across the city. Chuck’s passing is a terrible loss for his family, friends, and the entire Albuquerque community. As we reflect on his legacy, we are inspired to continue his work of building a brighter, safer future for everyone. Director Dave Simon, City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department
