Fugitive suspected of killing Fontana businessman with baseball bat described by police as a ‘hobo’

A 79-year-old Fontana businessman who was beaten with a baseball bat by a burglar died on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and police are looking for the man who they say swung the fatal blow.
Ronalee Barrett Stanberry, 37, has no connection to the city, said Officer Steve Reed, a Fontana Police Department spokesman, but investigators hope that someone will recognize him and alert authorities.
The businessman and his son entered their Allstate insurance office at 9782 Sierra Ave. a few minutes before 9 a.m. on Jan. 10. The victim sat at the front desk and his son went to the rear.
A man police believe is Stanberry was already inside after breaking in through the roof, said Reed, who could only speculate why Stanberry chose that particular business in a strip mall.
The son spotted the man and attempted to shoo him out of the business.
“And on his way out he grabbed a wooden bat and struck the victim in the head one time,” Reed said. “The son wrestled with the suspect and got him out of the business.”
The bat was emblazoned with the Allstate insurance logo, Reed said.
Stanberry fled and was later identified by video evidence as a suspect, Reed said.
The businessman’s name has not been announced.
Stanberry has previous arrests in Chino, Kern and Los Angeles counties and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Reed said. Various websites list Stanberry as a resident of Boron in Kern County.
Fontana Police Chief Michael Dorsey described Stanberry as a “hobo.”
“This guy, it sounds like he just hops trains and goes from town to town,” Reed said. “We haven’t had any contact with him before.”
Police ask anyone with information on Stanberry to contact the department at 909-854-8172 or [email protected].
