Warwick City Council passes resolution to create school budget commission
Jan 22, 2025
WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — The Warwick City Council passed a resolution Wednesday night requesting the establishment of a school budget commission.
Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi proposed the creation of the new commission to address the district's $9 million deficit.
Picozzi wants to eventually appoint three out of the commission's five proposed members to assist the district with balancing its books.
But Warwick School Committee Chairman Shaun Galligan expressed concern over who would be selected for the commission. He worries that the commission will be made up of members who don't fully understand the inner workings of the district.

Though Galligan respectfully opposes establishing the commission, Picozzi believes it's necessary to hold the district accountable.
"I don't feel confident they can resolve this on their own," he said. "They created the deficit. They passed a budget last year that had a $9 million structural deficit. I have to be sure and that's why we need experts."
It will take some time for the commission to become a reality, since the resolution still has to go through the legislative process. It's next stop is the R.I. House of Representatives.
