SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Hundreds of kids are set to make a splash in Sioux Falls. Another day of practice is underway at the Midco Aquatic Center as the Sioux Falls Swim Team prepares to host its January Invite. "It's a chance for our swimmers to get to race at home, but also to bring swimmers from around the region and show off our beautiful facility here at Midco," Sioux Falls Swim Team Head Coach Kyle Margheim said. Head Coach Kyle Margheim says more than 500 swimmers from 16 teams across five states will compete in the event. "So you have teams coming from Fargo and Omaha and Sioux City, Minneapolis that are attracted to come here because they know it's a fast pool and that we host a good meet, and I think that makes it, just kind of ups the ante a little bit for our kids," Margheim said. Prince Harry greets SD firefighters in CA "It's going to be pretty crazy. There's going to be a lot of people here, lots of fast swimming, lots of fast events. It's a great opportunity to swim fast so it's going to be pretty exciting," Sioux Falls Swim Team swimmer Tyler Kay said. Tyler Kay has been swimming for 12 years. He plans to compete at the collegiate level and says there are lessons to be learned in and out of the water. "Swimming teaches you a lot of things outside of the pool, like a good work ethic and just how to be a good teammate and a friend," Kay said. There are now 275 kids on the Sioux Falls Swim Team following a big boost in numbers after last summer's Olympics. "We had about 90 new kids this fall, so it was a busy fall for us and that's the most kids we've ever added to the program like that, and so it's just an exciting time as we keep building our program and as swimming keeps building some excitement, it keeps helping us," Margheim said. And that budding talent will be on display this weekend in Sioux Falls. "You're going to see some really good racing and you're going to see some kids doing some special things hopefully," Margheim said. The January Invite starts at 4:30 Friday at Midco Aquatic Center, and continues through the weekend. The event is open to the public and there is no cost to attend.
