KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Thirty-three months after breaking ground, this week has brought a sight that hadn't been seen in Midtown Kansas City since 1957. A streetcar has started slowly rolling down Main Street under the watchful eye of KC Streetcar Authority. "They were cheering are you guys ready for this and we were like yeah,' Richard Swift showed on a video he recorded. He and his wife Sheila opened Swift's Cajun Cuisine on Main Street a few months ago, along the future streetcar route near the Armour Boulevard stop with milestones like Wednesday in mind. "I think it could be good because the parking is limited here. It gives people the opportunity to get off at a stop that is within 100 feet and just come enjoy our food," Sheila Swift said. Union calls for more suburban funding to KCATA Barbers at Crisp Cuts and Styles are equally excited. "I was happy, elated. To me it was just a sign of better things to come," franchisee Bobby Terry said. The testing comes after nearly three years of construction that included lots of traffic and parking woes for Main Street businesses and their customers. "Cones everywhere. Some of the people coming wanted to maybe check out the place, they get confused with all the cones," Nathan Duckworth, owner of Level KC Private Events, recalled. There's still months of planned testing ahead of the 3.5 mile $351 million extension. First for clearances, then fully integrating the system. There will be speed tests, ride quality checks and more. Pedestrians are advised to use caution as are those parking along the route. They'll have to acquaint operators with the route, before putting passengers on board later this year. Businesses are excited for what's to come later this year. "People on the street car are going to see all the activity they are going to see the clients sitting in the lobby," Terry said. "I think the streetcar is going to benefit every business on Main Street," Duckworth said. Starting Monday, January 27, they are going to suspend all streetcar service for about two weeks to tie in to the existing system. When both extensions are complete the streetcar will take you all the way from UMKC down to the Berkley Riverfront.
