INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An unprecedented Gulf Coast winter storm left a trail of snowfall from eastern Texas through the Florida panhandle and up the Carolina coast.
For starters, the first-ever blizzard warning was issued for Louisiana which was also the first blizzard warning for the entirety of the Gulf Coast. Snowfall amounts were largely 6 inches or more in southern Louisiana. New Orleans International Airport recorded 8.0 inches which is the most at this observing site which has been around since 1948.
This storm shattered the Florida state snowfall record with 9.8 inches falling in Milton, FL, the previous record was only 4.0 inches back in 1954.
Mobile, AL recorded 7.5 inches which broke their all-time snow record of 6.0 inches set back 1895.
A single report of 10.5 inches in Lafayette, LA was one of the higher reports with the entire storm system. Dec. 1 is the beginning of meteorological winter. Since that date, Lafayette, LA has had more snowfall than Anchorage, Bismark, Minneapolis, and Chicago.
